Prepared using the Tamkin Foundation Computer Network MPC@CFA.HARVARD.EDU URL https://www.minorplanetcenter.net/ ISSN 1523-6714 COMET C/2018 O1 (ATLAS) The first unequivocal confirmation that this object is a comet was reported R. Weryk (F51), who reported an enlarged FWHM (2" compared to stellar 1".35) and a ~6" tail towards the east in images obtained on Aug. 13. Earlier reports of enlarged FWHM were muddied by the non-reports of cometary features from observers using much larger instruments: P. Birtwhistle (J95) reported FWHM 24%-30% larger than stellar profiles on both July 31 and Aug. 9; E. Prosperi (160, Aug. 9.86 UTC) reported a diffuse coma, FWHM 4".3, compared to stellar 2".3; K. Sarnecsky (K88, Aug. 3.9 UTC) reported a slightly diffuse circular ~10"-diameter coma, but no tail; D. Bamberger (Z80) reported a fuzzy circular 13"-diameter coma and possible 16" tail in P.A. 138 on July 23.98 UTC, and a fuzzy circular 14"-diameter coma on Aug. 3.01 UTC; and L. Buzzi (204, Aug. 24 UTC) reported a compact 10"-diameter coma, possibly extended to the SW.
