• MPC Preparation (Info)
  • This page provides new unpublished observations of NEOs (q<1.3 AU) and TNOs (distanct objects, q>5.6 AU) that are extending the arc from one opposition to multiple oppositions. Additional observations are highly desirable. Once new observations provide at least two distinct nights on the second apparition, recovery MPEC will be issued and unpublished observations will be removed from this page. Two distinct nights are defined as obsevations separated by > 0.75 day, alternatively by > 0.5 day from at least three distinct obscodes. Single nights on two additional apparitions can also result in recovery MPEC. The algorithm itself search for additional observations from the isolated tracklet file, if those are found on the same apparition, the observations will be processed immediately. Objects with observational arc less than 238 days (= 17 2-week periods) are considered 1-opposition by definition. For objects with arc 238 days or more, we calculate the times of solar conjunction from the fitted orbit and determine the number of apparitions from there. The pipeline running the page automatically searches the isolated tracklet file and adds the tracklets to the page, therefore, it may happen that there would be a tracklet in the same (single) apparition as the published orbit - it can be removed and accepted to the existing single-apparition orbit by submitting the identification to the Identifications pipeline. Note, that occasionally the page could also show tracklets that do not belong to the object, as they might be misidentified by the submitter or by the MPC identification routine, therefore, having the confirmation tracklets on the second night is crucial.

NEO observations waiting for recovery MPEC

NEO recovery MPECs are issued once per day, automatically at 14:00 UTC and the table is updates once per hour or when new observations are added. The table provides link to the current orbit (Object), unpublished astrometry in obs80 (old) and ADES XML (new) format, number of tracklets and nights for the unpublished astrometry, time stamp of when the latest unpublished astrometry was added, new (possible) orbit with included unpublished astrometry and the date when the recovery MPEC will be issued. The MPEC is issued when the new arc leads to a multi-opposition orbit and at least two distinct nights are provided on a second apparition. There is a minimum 24 hour period between when conditions are met and MPEC is issued. The last three columns show the current date (0:00 UTC) geocentric sky-plane position in RA, DEC; solar elongation (deg) and apparent V-band magnitude.
